Want a dynamic, collaborative data store for gadgets embedded in your site? If you answered “yes” to either question, you’re in luck – spreadsheet gadgets can be embedded directly in spreadsheets or use spreadsheets as dynamic data stores.

For example, here’s a Motion Chart gadget that’s reading data from a spreadsheet. You or a collaborator can add more data to the gadget by modifying the underlying spreadsheet.

Or here's a much simpler example that just integrates Google maps with a simple spreadsheet:

You can extend any existing gadget into a spreadsheet gadget with the Google Visualization API. When your gadgets are ready for prime time, you can submit them to the Gallery and possibly get your gadgets featured on our Gadget picker within the Google Docs spreadsheets editor. Its now possible for multiple instances of a gadget - on the home pages of different users - to access the same user-preference data, the part of the gadget state that is hosted by iGoogle.

We've enabled this for an initial set of existing gadgets where it makes sense - see the post on the Google Blog.

If you think it makes sense for your gadget, just add this line to your the ModulePrefs section of your gadget:

<optional feature="shareable-prefs">

This line tells iGoogle to present a new sharing UI for the gadget, prompting the user to specify friends to share data with and whether the friends should have read-only or write access to the shared data. The UI also offers the user a means to see who they are sharing the gadget with and modify access rights.

Its a simple sharing model - last write wins, and a reload is required to see changes made by others. We look forward to seeing new collaborative gadgets that take advantage of this feature, and we can always make it better - with your feedback.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-390254169993334667.post-38321960711967434422008-03-21T13:31:00.000-07:002020-07-16T14:32:14.975-07:00Join us at Google I/OPosted by Dan Holevoet, Google Gadgets Team

I thought I'd let you all know about Google I/O, a developer event upcoming on the 28th and 29th of May at Moscone West in San Francisco. Once you've finished the tutorial, look for more information in the OpenSocial docs and Google group.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-390254169993334667.post-70565099564896020952008-01-14T14:33:00.000-08:002020-07-16T14:32:15.423-07:00New Gadget Developer Tutorials on YouTubePosted by Daniel Lee, Google Gadgets Team

While we've been working on exciting new developments for gadgets, we also want to make sure it's faster and easier to jump in and learn the API. This is the first step to fully open sourcing the stack that powers Google Gadgets and iGoogle today. The Google Gadgets team (and many others!) have been working to release several components that will eventually allow any site to host and serve gadgets.

This first commit contains both the Gadget Container JavaScript and Gadget Server. Though we still have much to add, the Gadget Container JavaScript already supports some basic gadget functionality, user pref editing, a layout manager, and the ability to choose where your gadgets are rendered - gmodules.com or your very own gadget server!

If this sounds interesting, take a look at the code, and drop by the group - we're excited to hear from you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-390254169993334667.post-65476563757737058232007-12-11T16:47:00.000-08:002020-07-16T14:32:15.386-07:00Writing Gadgets with Google Mashup EditorPosted by Brian Shih, Google Gadgets Team

Do you use the Google Mashup Editor? Did you know you can use GME to create a mashup and then distribute it as a gadget on iGoogle, Google Desktop, and more? Jason Cooper, from the GME team, has a great article on how to use the Mashup Editor to create and publish Google Gadgets.

If you're already using GME, this is a great way to share your mashup with millions of iGoogle users by releasing your mashup as a gadget. Check out some of the existing mashups in the gallery!Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-390254169993334667.post-27140753372870124272007-12-06T10:36:00.000-08:002020-07-16T14:32:14.863-07:00Now that we have your attention…Posted by Daniel Holevoet, Google Gadgets Team

We thought we'd take a moment to formally invite you to participate in the Google Gadgets API group. Nearly two years after we first launched Google Gadgets on iGoogle, things have certainly changed. And because we have a lot of cool stuff to tell you about, we were inspired to launch this blog. Here are some highlights of what we've unveiled so far:

Thanks in part to Google Gadgets for Your Webpage, there are billions of gadget pageviews per week. You can also build gadgets for a number of other Google products including Desktop, Calendar and Maps. More recently, we've opened up access to the Finance API, where you can retrieve and display stock information within your gadget. For those of you who want to advertise with rich media, we also have Gadget Ads.

In addition to these, we've also redesigned the Gadgets website and hope you find our new homepage more useful and easier to navigate. And to keep up with the latest in what is going on with the gadgets family, we've created an API Overview page.

The gadgets world is growing faster than ever, so to keep in touch with the ever-changing landscape, check this blog frequently (or subscribe to the feed) for new features, news about more sites where you can distribute your gadget and other related updates. In the meantime, put on your gadget hat and go write some great apps!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
